Why are black people criticized for wearing gold?

I've noticed that black people always receive heavy criticism when they wear a large amount of gold and or other jewels. More notably rappers and singers are most criticized as they usually wear LARGE, creative and expensive jewelry. I've heard people say that black people just want to buy a large amount of gold as soon as they get money to show off their wealth. What's wrong with that? Don't we all regardless of ethnic group show off in some way or another? Could the criticism be stemmed from jealousy because gold and jewels regardless of quantity suit black people? Or do people just see such quantities as excessive?
