Cat has respiratory rate 28 when sleeping but 72 when awake?

she breathes normally when she is sleeping but when she is awake she breathes faster and more shallow. i took her to the vet and they didnt really detect anything abnormal, just suggested getting an xray done, but what could this mean? did anyone elses cat experience this?
